Pragmatic Comprehension of English Euphemism

英语委婉语既是一种语言现象,又是一种社会现象。它的形成主要是各种社会因素综合作用的结果。本文从委婉语的定义出发,着重分析了委婉语的三大语用功能:避讳功能、礼貌功能和掩饰功能,使英语学习者能正确运用委婉语,大大促进跨文化交流的有效性。

Euphemism, as a cultural and social phenomenon as well as a linguistic concept plays an important part in social com- munication. It is the result of various social factors. This paper discusses the origin and definition of euphemism, analyzes three euphemism pragmatic functions ： taboo functions, politeness function, refinement function and points out that appropriate using of English euphemism is an effective method to achieve the aim of harmonious intercommunication.
