从西方的角度来看，歌剧仍是今日国际级大都会文化组成的重要部分，这是因为歌剧是西方众多艺术的高度凝聚，能呈现出西方的价值观、历史观、思想观、文化观，是上层文化建筑冠冕上的红宝石，难怪至今仍有人认为歌剧是进入西方上层社会、西方人的思想世界中的钥匙。然而歌剧却往往有着很高的制作成本，曾经是英国殖民地的香港，歌剧的存在作用，仍是附庸风雅的多，
The West considers opera as an index for any international metropolis.Yet opera productions can be prohibitively expensive. In Hong Kong,a former British colony,opera remains an art form that appeals only to a niche market.Because of limited resources,putting on 2-3 productions a year is already considered quite good.But looking back at 2010,the diversity of productions in Hong has shown some positive signs for a brighter future.
