On the Essence of the University Motto

大学校训是大学在办学实践基础上根据一定社会目标要求和遵循大学本质逻辑所拟定的以表征大学独立思想、传统精神和办学特色,并对师生行为具有导向性、规范性和勉励性作用而高度凝练成的一种办学格言。大学校训的制定要依循大学校训的本质,离开大学校训的本质就不可能有效地实现其功能,也就偏离了大学校训的初衷。大学校训的本质决定了大学校训的内容要遵循共性与个性的统一、继承与创新的统一、学理性与可操作性的统一、合目的性与合规律性的统一,这也是大学校训建设的基本原则和方法论问题。

The university motto, a highly concise maxim formulated on the basis of the school-running practice of the school and according to the social objectives and the essential logic of the university, embodies the independent idea, the traditional spirit and the character of the school and functions as guidance, standardization and encouragement for the behavior of teachers and students. It should conform to the essence of the university motto, without which it cannot achieve its functions and will deviate from its original intention. Its essence decides that it should realize the unification of commonness and individuality, the unification of inheritance and innovation, the unification of rationality and maneuverability, and the unification of conformity with the purpose and conformity with the law. And these four unifications are actually the principle and the methodology of formulating a university motto.
