Heart-brain communication theory of ZHANG Xi-chun

张锡纯的心脑相通理论,认为神明有元神与识神之分,神明之体在脑、神明之用在心,心脑之间相通,这个通路就是神明运行、神机升降的道路。生理状态下,心脑之间息息相通,神志正常;病理状态下,痰浊内生或痰火上泛,"瘀塞其心与脑相连窍络",则神志失常。他还提出,思考和记忆是神明运行的2种不同方式,是神机升降的两种相对的过程。思考是神机发散的过程,神由脑及心而发挥作用;而记忆是神机收敛的过程,神由心及脑而贮藏积蓄。心脑相通理论是对传统中医神志病理论的重要补充和创新,能够有效地指导一些神志疾病的临床治疗。

In the heart-brain communication theory of ZHANG Xi-chun,Shenming can be divided into Yuanshen and Shishen.The substance of Shenming located in the brain and the function in the heart.The access between them is path of the Shenming activities.In physiological conditions,the access keeps unobstructed to ensure the normal mental activities.In pathological conditions,if the phlegm or phlegm fire obstructs the access,the mental activities will become abnormal.ZHANG also consider that thinking and memory are different styles of mental activities and they are comparative.Thinking is the ascending process of Shen,from brain to heart.Otherwise,memory is the descending process of Shen,from heart to brain.The theory is an important implement and innovation to traditional Chinese psychiatry,it can direct the clinical treatment of psychiatric diseases effectively.
