The kinds of crops, traits of transgenes and plantation areas of commertialized transgenic crops in different countries in 1997 were described in detail, and were compared with those in 1996. Economic benefits and just emerged deficiencies of commertialized transgenic crops were introduced as well . Different points of view have been holding on the potential risks of transgenic crops. Some famous scientists working in different disciplines were invited by the World Bank to write the monograph, “Bioengineering of Crops - Report of the World Bank Panel on Transgenic Crops”, which was published in October, 1997. Their views on the possible problems of transgenic crops, which were discussed in Chapter 3 of this monograph, were introduced. But the duration of commercialization of transgenic crops was too short and the results of ecological risk assessment were obtained from the release of transgenic crops in small scale. Whether those results will match the commericlized field scale or not, that will be determined by the analysis of the data obtained from field monitoring in a long duration. According to our view, it is obviously too early to reach the conclusion of the safety of the commercialized transgenic crops.
