From the angle of psychoanalysis, this essay notices that behind the ＂absurd＂ characters of Harold Pinter＇s ＂The Birthday Party＂ （1958） hides their narcissistic personality. By presenting the images of individuals who have been deprived of love, who are self-absorbed, lack empathy, keep a grandiose self, constantly indulge in fantasies and are haunted by the sense of insecurity, Pinter explores the psychological crisis of the modem Western society.
