英国作家约翰.法尔斯是当代重要的后现代主义小说家。他的作品《魔法师》以第一人称的叙述者讲述了主人公在幻想、谎言与现实的不确定中痛苦挣扎、煎熬的独特经历,内容荒诞离奇,叙述的故事让人真伪难辨,阐释了他的存在主义哲学思想,极具后现代主义的叙事特征。小说采用了内部聚焦和外部聚焦相结合的叙事方法和简短的叙述语句,大量运用了自由直接引语和自由间接引语来表现人物的对话。同时,变异的语句结构,矛盾句和矛盾修饰等修辞方式的灵活使用,也极大地丰富了作者的语言表现力。

John Fowles is an important figure in contemporary British postmodernist literature.The Magus,one of his major novels,has strong postmodernist features with fascinating and absurd contents which make it difficult for the readers to judge whether the story is real or imagined.The author uses the first person narrator to recount the protagonist＇s special experience of struggling in the agony of uncertainty of vision,lie,and reality and expounds his existentialist philosophy.Also the narrative technique of internal and external focalizers as well as short narrative sentences,free direct speech and free indirect speech to present the speeches of the characters are all employed.At the same time,the flexible use of deviated sentence structures,paradoxes and oxymoron has greatly enriched the author＇s capacity of expression.
