The Spectator of the Transcendental Age:Study of Hawthorne's Thoughts

美国小说家纳撒尼尔·霍桑在19世纪上半叶美国的废奴运动、女权运动、禁酒运动、公有制社会改革运动和美国内战中逆时代风潮而行,表现出超越肤色、性别、种族、国家和阶级的人道主义关怀,他在过去与现在、个人与社会的关系问题上坚守的理性主义原则,比起当时在美国社会占领军地位的超验主义思想来更能穿透时空的限制,为我们提供启示与借鉴。

From Hawthorne＇s age（the first half of 19th century） to the present day,the modern human history of almost two hundred years has given the evidence： the rationalism Hawthorne demonstrated in dealing with the relationship between past and present,individual and society,the humanistic concern he wisely and daringly showed toward the social issues when most of his transcendentalist contemporaries got deeply involved in abolitionism,feminism,communitarianism,temperance and the Civil War,etc..Even though,transcendentalism occupied a demanding position in that era,Hawthorne＇s thoughts on all of these issues are more likely to break through the bondage of time and space to enlighten us in the 21st century.
