Subject,Mass and Citizen——The Change of Individual Political Role and Modern State Building in China

现代国家的成长,在某种程度上意味着个体政治角色的现代性变迁。就西方而言,与现代国家成长相伴随的是,由臣民直接到公民的个体政治角色变迁过程。而中国是在西方现代国家的入侵挑战下才被动进行现代国家建构的,因而在中国现代国家的成长过程中,个体政治角色却是由臣民到群众再到公民这一变迁轨迹。

To some extent,modern state building means the change of individual political role.In the west,the modern state building is endogenous.With the modern state building,the individual political role changes from subject to citizen.But in China,the modern state building begins with the western aggressions,so the individual political role changes from subject to mass to citizen.
