Traffic detection technology is not only an important part of intelligent transportation systems （ITS）, but it is also the base of intelligent monitoring, controlling, analyzing, decision-making and scheduling. The performance, characteristics and working principles of eight traffic detection technologies available were summarized, compared and analyzed with their application process and prospect described.
