Due to their chemical structure coal tar pitches are especially suited as binders for the manufacturing of anodes. Recent trends in raw materials, in processing of crude coal tar to binder pitches and in new transportation systems are outlined. By newly developed analytical and testing methods in combination with advanced processing technology, improved binder pitch qualities are made available in order to meet the increasingly stringent requirements for anodes in aluminium production.
