The Leading Role Taken by the University in the Development of Social Culture

兴起社会主义文化建设新高潮,推动社会主义文化大发展大繁荣,是党的十七大提出的战略任务。大学作为文化传承和发展的重要场所,对社会文化发展具有引领作用,这也是大学的第四功能。大学率先进行文化建设是审时度势的必然选择,大学要认清自身的职责和使命,加强自身文化建设,主动引领社会文化,为推动社会主义文化大发展大繁荣作出应有的贡献。

To bring about a new upsurge in socialist cultural development and promote a vigorous development and prosperity of the culture is the strategic task proposed by the Seventeenth National Congress of the Commu- nist Party of China. In addition to teaching, research, and social service, the fourth function of the university is to take a leading role in the development of social culture, which is the inevitable choice made by a univer- sity that has acquired a prudent and wise judgment about the times and its own situation. With a good under- standing of its own duty and mission, the university has to enhance development of its own culture and play an active part in leading the development of social culture, thus making its contribution to promoting a vigorous development and prosperity of socialist culture.
