Science and democracy were two great banners carried by Chinese revolutionary thinkers during the May 4^th Movement, but science was worshiped as a surrogate of religion, which made people at that time miss a true understanding of science. As Chen Duxiu was the staunchest advocate of science in the movement, it is very informative to explore his views on science and his descriptions of science with a religious passion in his writings.
