China and Korea Wrestle for Top Shipbuilder Crown

During the course of 2010,Chinese yards delivered 61m dwt of ships,and for the first time overtook South Korea to become the biggest shipbuilding country in the world.Over the course of the year,China output more deliveries in terms of numbers, dwt,GT and CGT that Korea.China's share of global deliveries (in dwt) surpassed South Korea's for the first time to edge above 40%.However,as a result of the greater number of the most complex vessels built in Korea,they remain slightly ahead in terms of the contracted value of deliveries($47.1 bn versus China's $40.2 bn).What this demonstrates is that,as with other manufacturing industries in China,reaching the number one position for output does not necessarily equate to a leading position in terms of added value.Before celebrating the achievements of the Chinese shipbuilding industry too hard,one must consider the next steps.
