从古文字学、易学、美学、古典哲学等角度切入,对"交通大学"校名的本义进行了考释,认为化裁上下谓之"交"、推而前之谓之"通"、天地人合谓之"大"、教尔经典谓之"学";"交通"二字蕴含了"天地交"的"爻变之道"与"万物通"的"亨通之道",属于"交通成和而万物生"的天地境界;论证了适时的"绝地天通"是一种不通之通,提出"交通"二字属木火,对应春夏两季,校庆日4月8日即春夏万物"生发"之意;"木火交大"与"水木清华"异曲同工,在中华大地相映生辉。
