林语堂认为唐传奇《莺莺传》为中国古代最著名的爱情小说,对其喜爱有加。元稹《莺莺传》的思想意义比较复杂,林语堂《中国传奇》将其改编以新形式写出。林氏认为元稹小说记此事,托名为张生,实际上是元稹的自传;林语堂同情莺莺的悲苦命运,不满元稹始乱终弃的行为,以为就元稹人品而言并不见重于世。这些思想决定了林氏改编《莺莺传》而成的小说无论在叙事内容还是叙事形式上都呈现出新的特征。

Lin Yutang considered The Biography of Ying Ying as the most famous love story in ancient China and loved it.Lin adapted it in Famous Chinese Short Stories.He believed that Yuan Zhen wrote the legend with Zhang Sheng the hero but actually it was Yuan＇s autobiography.Lin showed sympathy for Ying Ying＇s grief destiny and had widespread malcontents for a bad conduct of Yuan Zhen.Lin held that Yuan Zhen,who seduced and abandoned a woman,exposed his unwelcome disposition.All make the adaptation have any new characteristics both in the content and the type.
