伯宁豪森论争是发生于20世纪70年代关于知识自由与图书馆社会责任关系问题的讨论,被认为是ALA历史上最著名的冲突之一。通过对论争各方面内容的分析可以发现,社会责任与知识自由和中立原则能够相互并存、协调发展,社会责任还能够更好地促进知识自由和中立原则理念的实现。

The Berninghousen Debate is one of the most memorable conflicts in the American Libra-ry Association history about the relationship between intellectual freedom and library social responsibility in 1960s.It can be found that social responsibility and intellectual freedom as well as the principle of neutrality can coexist and develop coordinately.Meanwhile,the social responsibility can promote the realization of intellectual freedom and principle of neutrality.
