Positron emission tomography(PET)is a new functional image technique that permits boththe tomographic delineation of cerebral structures and the measurement of the local tissue concentrations ofinjected radioactive tracers.PET has been widely used for quantitative assessment of regional bloodflow,metabolic rates,and various neurotransmitter receptor functions in the brain,myocardium and varioustumor tissues.In this paper,the principle of the PET technique was introduced including the coincidencedetection,the image reconstruction,the labeled compounds,and the tracer kinetic models.It is concluded thatPET will give a great impact to the future advancements of life science and clinical diagnosis in the 21century.
