The inner motives of Edna's suicide are analyzed in the Eco-feminist perspective. The oppression of the father-husband union is the basic reason for her death;moving into"a room of her own"also plays an important part in inducing her to suicide. The call of the sea is a catalyst, while being discarded by her lover is the blasting fuse. The novella means to deconstruct the traditional binary opposition and makes Edna commit suicide by drowning herself in the sea in order to reclaim her self identity in nature.By putting her being to an end,it tries to make her being significant, which is ironically an Utopian ideal and could not be easily realized in reality.
