This paper probes into the origin of the ending consonant [-l] in Chinese Dialects. Pre- viously the majority of linguists agree that it roots from the mediaeval ending consonant [-p -t -k]. Based on our field investigation and previous researches, this paper leads to a different conclusion that the ending consonant [-l] in Chinese dialects has in fact two origins: the simplification of the mediaeval [-p -t -k]; sound change of [-?] under some particular phonetic conditions.
