A Summary of Jesuits’ Index Compilation in China before 20th Century

中国现代意义上的索引滥觞于17世纪耶稣会士在华编纂的圣经索引,20世纪前耶稣会士在华编纂的书后索引、期刊索引、专题索引和辞书索引,在中国现代索引编纂史上有着特殊的意义。本文从索引史的角度,对20世纪前耶稣会士在华编纂的索引作一概述。

The index in China in modern sense originated from the Jesuits’ index compilation for Bible in 17th-century China. The indexes that Jesuits compiled in China before 20th century include the indexes attached to books, the periodical index, the special subject index and the dictionary subject index, which are of special significance in the history of Chinese modern index compilation. From a historical perspective, this paper gives a summary of Jesuits’ index compilation in China before 20th century.
