The number of pediatricians in China has grown by only 5,000 over the past 15 years, and pediatric hospitals account for a paltry 0.52 percent of all hospitals in China. According to a study by the China Medical Doctor Association, in 2008 China hod 61,700 pediatricians but 230 million children under the age of 14. The ratio of doctors per 1,000 patients was a mere 0.2598, far below the U.S. figure of 1.4558.
