According to the engineering geological conditions of big underground opening of No 1 driving station in Nanfen Iron Mine,the formation,characteristics,failure mechanism of self sustaining structure and its relationship with supporting mode are presented.Then based on the results of in site monitoring and numerical simulation the formation of self sustaining structure in No 1 driving station and its stability are analyzed.
