Giri is a traditional culture in Japan,and it refers to a sense of reputation and also a kind of obligation.The creative use of Giri in Vineland written by American postmodern writer Thomas Pynchon proves that Giri is one of the attempts for Pynchon to rebuild the spiritual homeland from the oriental civilization during the period of religion crisis in the western society.Giri is like a chain in the novel,not only connecting the times,linking the structure and plots,but also being the bond between the people＇s relationships which are on the verge of collapse and are of extraordinary significance.
