Denarration, though emerged as an important concept in recent narrative studies, has yet received little investigation on its literary significance from the perspective of audience response. By adopting James Phelan's rhetorical approach to narrative, this paper studies the technique of denarration used in the novel of Life o.fPi,and discusses the interaction between narrative progression and audience judgment based on a close reading of the judgment made by the narratees within the fiction. The a- nalysis reveals that denarration is underpinned by explicit or im- plicit ethical positions and that the audience's interpretive judgment is influenced by their ethical judgment of the narrators and narratees. While there are varieties of denarration, its effect on story-discourse distinction should be explored within the specific context of an individual narrative.
