Consciously or unconsciously, people usually use irony in everyday speech communication and written genres. Verbal irony has been receiving considerable attention from linguists and cognitive psychologists. Theories of the interpretation of irony have been put forward, among which, Sperber & Wilson's Echoic - Interpretation Theory of Irony is most influential and convincing. This paper attempts to analyse verbal irony in Pride and Prejudice to prove that the Echoic - Interpretation Theory of Irony has powerful interpretation power to language, with which we can have a better understanding to the unique irony art and waggish language charm in Austen's works.
