《劝学篇》作为中国近代最具有影响力的一部教育名著,除了它的学术价值之外,部分篇章所提出的改革和发展留日教育的思想与措施也是值得借鉴的。本文以鸦片战争后中国人西洋观的嬗变为《劝学篇》问世的时代背景,从《劝学篇》所反映的游学目的、游学作用、游学趋向三方面的认识来剖析其游学思想,从而揭示出张之洞提出"中体西用"思想的缘由,并对其游学思想进行客观评价。探讨《劝学篇》对理解中国近代留日现象以及近代日本对中国教育现代化的影响具有深远的意义。

Exhortation to Study is one of the most i,fluential modern masterpieces on China＇ s education. The book is of high academic value. Some of its chapters offer thoughts and measures concerning the reform and the development of studying in Japan. Exhortation to Study was finished after the Opium War, which witnessed the alteration of Chinese people＇ s view on the western world. This paper diseusses ＂the thought of studying during traveling＂ of Exhortation to ,Study, from the perspectives of its purposes, effects and trends, with the aim of revealing the reasons why Zhang Zhidong raised the thought of Chinese Learning as P^neipal Part, Western Learning for Use. At the same time, this paper aims to objectively evaluate ＂the thought of studying during traveling＂ from Exhortation to Study. Studying Exhortation to ,Study is highly significant for understanding the phenomenon of studying in Japan in modern China and the effects that modern Japan has brought to the modernization of China＇ s education.
