This paper focuses on the evolution process and spatial disparities of the township enterprises in the Pearl River Delta since Chinas reform of economic system and opening to the outside world in 1978. Six stages of the township enterprises development were identified according to the annual growth rate of gross output value of township enterprises, namely, the starting stage (1978～1983), the abnormal expanding stage (1984～June 1986), the adjusting stage (July 1986～June 1989), the dropping stage (July 1989～1990), the rapidly rising stage (1991～1993) and the steadily developing stage (after 1994) sequentially. The spatial disparity of the township enterprise development was analyzed with the aid of rescaled distance cluster in hierarchical cluster analysis in which 28 cities and areas were chosen as the cases. The results revealed that the township enterprises have been developing differently. There are three types that appear a remarkable circle in geographic sense. The results suggest that the township enterprises in this region develop under the particular background to lead the industrialization and urbanization with the PRD style. However, the PRD should focus on turning the situations to their advantage, improving the investment environment for competition, the try to build active connection with international market.
