忠厚传家 诗书继世——琼州清代第一翰林吴典公家世门风考略

Honesty and Kindness Worth Inheriting, Poetry and Books Worth Passing on--An Investigation on the Ancestry and Morality of Lord Wudian from Qiongzhou, a Top Academician in the Late Qing Dynasty

府城七井八巷十三街之一的草芽巷其实叫草衙巷，梦周公出身远非贫苦。吴家“富甲郡城”主要得力于其子经商而非其它，但众口称道的吴氏“好善乐施”、“世传忠厚”、“诗书继世”确凿于史有载。其儿孙媳妇个个富于教养，堪称贤妻良母。“前人之积善如点灯。随点随尽；后人之继善如添油，逾添逾久。”足不出户的黄太安人竞有这等见识妙喻，其家学、门风由此可见一斑，真是“深植本根”!也让惯说套话、语言干瘪的今之子孙无颜面对!

One of so-called seven wells, eight alleys and thirteen lanes, the alley of Caoya, is actually called ＂Caoya＂ in which ＂ya＂ means yamen which referred to Governmental offices in ancient times. Lord Mengzhou was not born poor, and the Wu family was wealthy mainly because the son was a successful businessman. As was recorded and praised, the Wus were kind, honest and willing to help. And the wives and sons of the Wu were also polite, well-educated, and regarded as good examples. As one of them put it, ＂Ancestors did charity like illuminating a lamp but later generations can make the lamplight last forever by continuously doing good things.＂ What a wonderful simile, which indicates the knowledge and morality of the great family. This thought-provoking remark made today＇s descendents shameful about their empty words and meaningless statements.
