This paper explores the Evaluation strategies in the critical evaluation part of English academic book review by making an ATTITUDE analysis from the perspective of Appraisal Theory.A text and statistical analysis of the types and subtypes of Attitude resources in 10 sample book reviews chosen at random from two leading journals of linguistics and one famous website of linguistics shows that the reviewers' strategies of evaluation mainly lie in their careful manipulation of the frequency of different types and subtypes of Attitude resources and of the correlation between inscribed/tokens of Attitude and positive/negative Attitude. These strategies on the one hand help the reviewer foreground his authorial authority and put his authentic judgment through, and on the other hand make the review objective and polite sounding and thus contribute to the alignment of prospective readers.
