Reasons for the Rise and Fall of the Kaifeng Jews

开封犹太人于北宋时期定居开封,以经商为主,其宗教文化较独立。明清时是开封犹太人发展的鼎盛阶段,在这一时期,开封犹太人生存和发展的重心转向官商并重,且更侧重于习儒入仕。犹太会堂是传承犹太民族信仰的重要媒介,它的屡次修葺和最终坍塌是开封犹太人衰落的一个缩影。导致他们兴衰的根本原因应从犹太人自身思维方式的来源即犹太教义中的一神思想上来考察。

The Kaifeng Jews settled in Kaifeng in the Northern Song Dynasty. They took business as principal and were more independent in ideology and culture during this period the Kaifeng Jews met their developing peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. However they focused more on the study of Confucianism so as to get a better political status. Synagogue as important heritage of national media and faith, its repeated repairs and the eventual collapse were a microcosm of the decline of the Kaifeng Jews. The very reasons of the rise and fall of the Kaifeng Jews should trace back to their own way of thinking, namely the system of the thinking of one God.
