霍桑的《红字》和霍达的《穆斯林的葬礼》都以宗教信仰与人性本能的冲突为情节主线,描述了男女主人公面对宗教信仰和美好爱情间的矛盾时的痛苦挣扎。《红字》源于殖民时期严酷教权统治下新英格兰,通过女主人公海丝特.白兰的悲惨遭遇,反映了加尔文教(清教)统治的黑暗。《穆斯林的葬礼》则牵扯到一个穆斯林家族三代60年间的命运沉浮。两部小说发生于不同年代和国家,但其主题、主线运用、人物设置上都有相似之处。

There are many works probing the conflict of religious belief and humanity in world literature.The Scarlet Letter,the representative classic of Hawthorne who is a Romanist American writer,and Funeral of the Muslims by a Chinese women writer Huo Da who is of the Hui nationality are two excellent novels of them.The Scarlet Letter shows a love tragedy happened in the colonial New England under the harsh rule of religion.The story which adopts the scarlet letter as its key clue expresses the cruelty of the Calvinists（the Puritans） by the tragic life experience of Hester Prynne.Funeral of the Muslims tells about 60-year rise and fall history and 3-generation ups and downs fate and two generations＇ interlinked love tragedies.Although the stories in the two novels happened in different era and countries,both of them consist of some similarities in terms of theme,key clue and characterization.Through the comparative reading of the two novels,we can understand the two classics thoroughly.
