An Interview with Charles Altieri

查尔斯.阿尔提艾瑞是加州大学伯克利分校英语系教授、美国科学与艺术学院院士,主要研究诗歌与诗学,尤其关注诗歌与哲学、诗歌与视觉艺术关系的研究,已发表专著10部、学术论文百余篇。2011年初,阿尔提艾瑞教授在伯克利接受了浙江理工大学何庆机教授和吕凤仪副教授的采访,就美国20世纪诗歌的相关问题(如诗学嬗变、现代与当代诗歌的难度、现代派诗歌的抽象与客观性、现代派与后现代派的关系、哲学与诗歌的关系等问题)发表了看法。他认为主要的现代和后现代诗人的一个共同之处是建构主义创作原则,他们诗歌中的难度与抽象源于诗人不得不在一个科技与商品化主导的社会里写作——诗人必须寻找新的观察方式,必须重新捕捉具体性的活力。

Charles Altieri is Professor of English at University of California,Berkeley,and fellow of American Academy of Arts and Science.His academic research is primarily in the field of poetry and poetics,especially in relation to philosophy and to the visual arts.He is author of 10 books,including The Art of Modern American Poetry（2005）,The Particular of Rapture：An Aesthetics of the Affects（2003）,and Painterly Abstraction in Modernist American Poetry：The Contemporaneity of Modernism（1989）,as well as over 100 essays.In February 2011 when they worked at University of California at Berkeley as visiting scholars,Professors He Qingji and Lü Fengyi interviewed Professor Altieri.The interview covers various issues concerning twentieth century American poetry,such as the development of poetics,the difficulty of modern and contemporary poetry,abstraction and objectivity in modernist American poetry,the relation of modernist and postmodernist poetry,philosophy and poetry.Professor Altieri holds that major modernist and postmodernist poets share a constructivist principle of poetic creation,and that the difficulty and abstraction of their poetry comes from the fact that they have to write in and against science-and commodity-dominated society,where they need to find new ways of perceiving the world and recovering the force of concreteness.
