Contradictions in the Discourse of Marriage in Jane Eyre

英国的维多利亚时代,家庭和两性关系进入了一个不稳定和敏感的阶段,婚姻模式正在逐步发生转变,婚姻和婚姻中的平等问题成了当时流行的话题。本文对《简·爱》中有关婚姻平等的典型话语进行分析,透过语言实践自身的矛盾来展现文本的暧昧以及人物在阶级和意识形态上的模棱两可,揭示出维多利亚社会的精神理想与复杂现实之间的差异,正是这种差异造成人们在婚姻中面临的困境、矛盾冲突乃至最后妥协,也体现了生活的变易特性。

In the Victorian period,family and sexual relationship were entering into a phase of instability and sensitivity.Marriage and equality in marriage became a very popular and important topic.This thesis deals with some typical discourses of marriage and equality as well as their potential references in Jane Eyre.By presenting the self-contradictions of language practice,it attempts to demonstrate the ambiguities of the text and of the characters in class and ideology in order to show that the discrepancy between the ideal of marital equality espoused by the Victorian society and the complicated social reality has caused a lot of dilemmas and conflicts in the Victorian marriage which people have to confront and finally compromise with.This discrepancy also reflects the changeability of life.
