According to historical records, CHEN Wanli, a scholar from Beijing University, spied on Langdon Warner and prevented him from stealing Dunhuang Wall-paintings. In my opinion, this historical record can only be verified by the lettered addressed by Warner to Stein and the book Buddhist Wall Paintings: A Study of a Ninth Century Grotto at Wan Fo Hsia written by Warner. In the book titled Xi Xing Ri Ji (Records of the Journey to West), there is no direct evidence proofing That CHEN Wanli kept spying on Warner and prevented him from stealing Dunhuang Wall-paintings. On the contrary, there are records indirecting that CHEN Wanli not only agreed and assisted the Americans to destroy Buddhist statues in the Southern Grottoes Temple, took away a stele with Horace Jayne, but also did not understood why local people were against Warner. Therefore, the author puts forward some questions on this historical record.
