摘要 《画里画外》是海勒的唯一一部长篇历史小说,小说中存在一种特殊的处理历史事件和历史小说叙事的策略,显示了历史作为"历史"的叙事和历史作为"小说"的叙事的关系。纷乱的历史事件表明:历史不是辩证发展的统一体,而是对历史事件的阐释。海勒克服真假二元对立的思维惯性和难以摆脱的历史"真实"的哲学观念。《画里画外》所体现的后现代历史观和叙事策略与海登·怀特历史书写理论不谋而合,有力地挑战了旧历史主义的决定论、目的论史观。 Picture This is Joseph Heller＇s only historical fiction,which utilizes various strategies of the postmodern historical novel to highlight the distinction between＂events＂and＂facts,＂displaying the tension between history writing and historical novel writing.In presenting that events are meaningless and facts are discourse defined,Heller echoes Hayden White＇s emphasis on emplotment of historiography,and therefore questions the coherence of traditional historical explanation.
