Falling Free is a short story by Diana Chan, who is one of the earlier Chinese American writers. This story has concerned about the identification of the female ethnic minority in America. The images related to "water" appear constantly, which attract readers' attention. By interpreting these images from a psychoanalytic feminist perspective, we can perceive the metaphor embodied in the story by the author; as an individual or collective psyche process, identification is of female nature. Therefore, the identification of the female ethnic minority can be analogized as a kind of mother--daughter relationship in the pre--Oedipus period. In this way, the author aims to set up a new discourse pattern to react to the confusion and anxiety the female subjects suffered in this process.
