The article is to reveal the new aesthetic spirit and its social basis by interpreting modern Chinese urban pop songs from the point of view of the spirit of May 4th and process of Chinese modernity. It point out that these songs are not only business culture and entertainment culture, but also cultural form containing May 4th spirit in three aspects： the pursuit of freedom, equality and the emancipation of personality inspired by Enlightenment; the appeal for saving the country and liberating the nation encouraged by patriotism; the quest for popularization and artistic quality of pop songs under the guidance of civilian＇s consciousness. It is beneficial for composing contemporary pop songs to analyze, evaluate and carry forward the spirit of May 4th movement contained in modern Chinese urban pop songs.
