On the Symbolic Meanings of "Blindness" in "Araby"

James Joyce is regarded as an adept in applying various images and symbolism.＂Araby＂,his famous short novel,is full of meaningful images.This paper digs into its repeatedly used image,＂blindness＂,discussing on its symbolic meanings from three aspects： the Ireland social reality,the protagonist＇s unreasonable love,and the Ireland moral situation.These three aspects not only indicate the reason of the protagonist＇s failed love journey,but also uncover the theme Joyce wants to show——the enclosed Ireland society,and the morally ＂paralyzed＂ Ireland people at the beginning of the 20th century.
