Stone in traditional Chinese culture is the symbol not only of power and divinity but also of fecundity and fertility, which incorporates men's understanding of their minds and fates. The mythological legend of "Yu born in stone" is rooted in the deep cultural connotations of the stone, which implies the primitive essence of ancient history and art;as a narrative prototype,it has had profound and far-reaching impact upon Chinese literature during the later centuries. The birth of the Monkey King in the stone in Xi You Ji(Journey to the West) and the marvelous fate of Jia Baoyu in relation to the jade stone in Hong Long Meng(A Dream of Red Mansions) have both been derived therefrom.
