On the Reason Why Yingying Denied the Letter in the Story of Xi Xiang Ji

西厢故事不论于雅于俗,堪称家喻户晓。莺莺赖简乃经典中的经典。既然邀请乃莺莺所发,为何事到临头却忽地翻脸赖简?西厢故事的三个主要文本——《莺莺传》、《西厢记诸宫调》(《董西厢》)、《西厢记》(《王西厢》)在此情节的描写方面存在颇大差异。文章加以比较和分析,牵扯出三位作者的性情文心的不同,以及西厢故事日臻细腻成熟的描写技巧等各种深层次问题。

Nearly all people in China know the Xi Xiang story.The part that Yingying denied the letter is one of the most famous parts in the whole story.Since the invitation was from Yingying,why did she deny the letter when the person she had invited arrived？ There are three main editions of this Xi Xiang story-Ying Ying Zhuan,Xi Xiang Ji Zhu Gong Diao（Dong Xi Xiang）,and Xi Xiang Ji（Wang Xi Xiang）.These three editions tell very different stories about this part.This article compares these different editions,noticing that the different authors understand the story differently,and the Xi Xiang story is more and more exquisite and natural by their hands.
