日军侵华期间,南京城墙遭到巨大破坏。上世纪九十年代,中日友好协会会长平山郁夫发起中日共同修复南京城墙,架起中日友好桥梁的行动。平山郁夫与南京城墙的不解之缘为他赢得了中日"文化交流贡献奖"。
