By briefly outlining how contour lines had been popularized in topographic mapping, this article presents two specific cases, one from Bing Thom Architects in Vancouver, the other Alaro Siza, to emphasize the point that site analysis ought not to be treated as a mere technical assessment process, but also a qualitative grasping of site' s potential and sense of place. Towards that goal, architects have always to ready to engage into a constant dialoguing between project and site conditions.
