An Opera Singer on His Way to Success:An Interview with Sun Li,Baritone Singer of China Armed Police Art Troupe

孙砾自2002年荣获第十届CCTV全国青年歌手电视大赛业余组美声唱法金奖后，又在2005年第三届中国国际声乐比赛中荣获第一名，在最近的几年中他又参演了数十部歌剧的演出取得了良好的声誉，他在艺术上的勤奋与追求逐渐为圈内人了解和瞩目。这也成为本期人物采访的缘由。

Sun Li won the gold medal in the category of bel canto for professional singers at the 10th CCTV National Contest for Young Singers in 2002,and again got the first place at the 3rd China International Singing Competition in 2005,and since then he has played in several dozen operas for recent years,which brought him high reputations and also made him better known among the music circle for his diligence and artistic pursuits.Hence we made this interview with Sun Li in this edition of our magazine. Journalist:What impressions have the Chinese works left on you in comparison with Western Classic operas? Sun:The four hundred years' history of Western operas can offer us many useful experiences from which we should learn.Chinese operas are in the stage of rapid development,but at this moment we need more practice to accumulate more experience or even more lessons.As far as the level of Chinese operas is concerned,many of them are in the process of experiments and therefore their qualities vary greatly.But in spite of this,performances should be maintained,and only by making constant practice can Chinese operas be further developed and promoted.I believe that it is necessary for more people to participate in opera production,and it is certainly impossible to work alone.Besides,when you find some opera singer's strength,you must recognize it and encourage him or her by providing more opportunities for practice so that he or she may reach a higher level of artistry in these encounters with opportunities.A good environment is always needed for the opera circle.For Westerners,Chinese singers in singing Western operas can only resemble their Western counterparts,no matter how well they can act.And it is of utmost importance that we the Chinese should make our own operas to express our own feelings,and this is the very essence of opera performance.
