托尼·莫里森的《柏油孩子》是以黑人民间传说为蓝本,演绎一个现代版的劝诫故事。在小说中莫里森不仅借用迈克尔、儿子、昂丁等人物之口,而且还通过黄衣女人、盲人骑士的妻子、夜幕中裸露乳房的女人等丰富意象告诫正在成长起来的新一代黑人女性,任何抛弃了民族历史文化传统的个人奋斗都是危险的,任何拒绝了母性文化传承的自我实现都是孤独和不自信的。

Based on a folktale of American blacks,Tar Baby can be interpreted as a modern cautionary tale.Both those characters such as Michael,Son,Ondine and the rich images,say,the women in yellow dress,the wives in the trees and the women with naked breast conveyed Morrison＇s cautionary message.She tries to warn modern black women of the danger to deny their own tradition,history as well as cultural maternity in the interest of self-fulfillment and self-struggle.
