Integrated compensation is a kind of translational compensation, referring to instances in which what is compensated is integrated into the translation imperceptibly.Since David Hawkes’ translation of Hong Lou Meng is full ofintegrated compensation, this paper takes it as research object and divides integrated compensation into three kinds, namely linguistic integrated compensation, cultural integrated compensation and poetical integrated compensation. It is found that integrated compensation is instrumental in enhancing the readability and understandability of the translation, giving priority to the target readers, and respecting the original text and source culture at the same time. However, due to the somewhat excessive employment ofintegrated compensation in Hawkes’ translation, its overall style takes on the tendency of becoming amplified, that is to say the relative simplicity of the original text is changed into the amplitude of the translation.
