Advances in Multiprotocol Label Switching

1.引言 Internet自90年代以来发展迅速,到目前已有超过3000万台主机,上网人数超过1亿人。这主要是因为WWW应用的出现,使Internet从一个面向研究团体的网络发展为大众化的公共数据网。但是随Internet规模急剧膨胀的是,Internet骨干网上需传输的数据越来越多。另一方面,人们一直努力在Internet网上发展新业务,如电子商务,在IP上传输话音,图像、视频等,IP网正从单一的数据网络发展成一综合业务网络。这要求因特网不仅要增加规模和带宽,而且要寻找更好的寻路技术减轻路由器的压力以及为新业务提供不同于数据传输的服务质量(QoS)。

Multiprotocol label switching is a new technology of combining IP and ATM networking technology. The Internet Engineering Task Force is finishing its standard. MPLS can improve the speed,extend the scalability and provide new services in the Internet. In this article,we first review the current IP over ATM technology .compare their merits and demerits. Then we mostly discuss the architecture and design of MPLS. Some related issues are also presented.
