The novel I AM the Clay, written by the American Jewish writer Chaim Potok, is considered to be the only one about Korean refugees among American novels of the Korean War. Though the description about Korean refugees' hard life during the war is mostly true, the creation of Korean refugee characters is still under the shade of the western model of exotic images of eastern people. On one hand, the author sets the refugees in the chaos of the Korean war; on the other hand, he creates them as the idealized and the demonized images within the context of western culture. These exotic images not only embody the author's infatuation for his own religious culture but also reflect the fixed western thinking of 'Western superiority and Eastern inferiority'.
