Pancreatic derived factor (PANDER) is a new cytokine cloned in 2002 with highly specific expression in pancreatic β- and α-cells. PANDER appears to colocalize to the insulin-containing secretory granules with insulin in β-cells. PANDER mRNA expression is regulated by glucose, transcriptional factors and cytokines. The secretion of PANDER is induced by glucose and insulin secretagogues. PANDER can induce the apoptosis of β-cells, and has delayed effects on inhibiting basal insulin secretion. PANDER also plays an important role in inhibiting insulin signaling in the liver cells, promoting hepatic steatosis and regulating hepatic glycogen metabolism.
