The Sound and the Fury,one of the most influential novels by William Faulkner（1897-1962）,centers on the falling of Katie,daughter of the Compson family,former Southern aristocrats who are struggling to deal with the dissolution of their family and its reputation.Her falling is actually the falling of the Compson family,which,as a whole,reflects the lossing and disappearing process of the traditions in the south.In the novel,the heroin Katie and the hero Quentin stand respectively the opposing sides who have different attitudes toward the traditional mores.Through the vivid description of Katie and Quentin,William Faulkner expresses his sad mood between ＂tradition＂ and ＂modernity＂,and his idea that love can save all.
